Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)

Our Commitment

The Sport Jiu-Jitsu Canadian Association National Federation (SJJCANF) is committed to fostering an equitable, diverse, and inclusive sport environment where all individuals are welcomed, respected, and able to participate fully in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

We recognize that equitable access to sport strengthens individuals, communities, and the development of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu across Canada. SJJCANF is committed to identifying and removing barriers to participation while promoting fairness, respect, and opportunity for all athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, and members.

Our work aligns with the values and principles outlined in the Canadian Sport Policy, Safe Sport initiatives, and the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).

Equity

Equity means ensuring fair access to opportunities and resources while recognizing that individuals and groups may experience different barriers to participation.

SJJCANF works to address structural and systemic barriers that may limit access to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Through equitable policies and practices, we strive to create pathways that allow all participants to train, compete, lead, and contribute within the sport.

SJJCANF is committed to cultivating a culture of belonging where:

  • Participants are treated with dignity and respect

  • Differences are valued and supported

  • Discrimination, harassment, and abuse are not tolerated

We recognize the importance of listening, learning, and building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities. Through our programs and partnerships, we strive to create opportunities that support Indigenous participation and representation within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Gender Equity

SJJCANF supports gender equity in all areas of sport, including participation, leadership, coaching, and competition.

We are committed to promoting opportunities for women and girls in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu while supporting equitable representation across all levels of the organization.

Mentorship and leadership development are essential to ensuring that the next generation of athletes and leaders reflects the diversity of Canada.

This includes considering:

  • Financial barriers

All members of the organization are expected to uphold the principles of safe sport and adhere to standards consistent with the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS).

Creating a culture of safety, respect, and accountability is essential to the integrity and growth of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Canada.

Ongoing Commitment

Equity, diversity, and inclusion require ongoing learning, reflection, and action. SJJCANF will continue to review policies, programs, and practices to ensure they reflect our commitment to equity and accessibility in sport.

By working together with athletes, clubs, coaches, and partners, we aim to build a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community that reflects the diversity and strength of Canada.
