🕊 In Memoriam: Professor Cleiber Maia

January 31, 1970 – February 10, 2026

It is with profound sadness that the Sport Jiu-Jitsu Canada Federation acknowledges the passing of Professor Cleiber Maia, President of SJJSAF and one of the foundational pillars of the SJJIF family worldwide.

Professor Maia was a fighter in the truest sense — on and off the mat. His dedication to elevating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, strengthening institutions, and building a future rooted in values, respect, and purpose has left a permanent mark on our sport.

He faced his final battle against cancer with dignity, courage, and unwavering faith. His character, leadership, and belief in Jiu-Jitsu as a tool for education, resilience, and inclusion inspired generations of athletes and professors across the world.

More than a leader, he was a devoted husband, father, brother, friend, and mentor. He built bridges. He opened doors. He strengthened community. His legacy is not measured in titles, but in the lives he shaped and the values he lived every single day.

On behalf of the Canadian Jiu-Jitsu community, we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire SJJIF global family.

We will continue to honor his mission, uphold his values, and carry forward the work he dedicated his life to.

Rest in peace, Professor.

Your legacy is eternal.
