Indigenous Participation in Sport
The Sport Jiu-Jitsu Canadian Association and Federation (SJJCANF) recognizes the importance of sport as a space for community, cultural expression, personal development, and leadership. We are committed to supporting the participation of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers within the sport of jiu-jitsu across Canada.
SJJCANF acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples have historically faced barriers to equitable participation in sport. As part of our commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and reconciliation, we work to create environments where Indigenous participants feel welcomed, respected, and supported at all levels of the sport.
Our approach includes:
Promoting accessible and inclusive pathways for Indigenous athletes and participants
Supporting safe and culturally respectful sport environments
Encouraging representation and leadership opportunities for Indigenous individuals within jiu-jitsu in Canada
Building relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities and organizations where possible
Continuing to listen, learn, and adapt our practices to better support Indigenous participation in sport
SJJCANF believes that strengthening Indigenous participation enriches the sport community and helps ensure that jiu-jitsu in Canada reflects the diversity of the country it represents.
